Bansuri – Part 5 – Playing Scales with Key Change – Practical
In this lesson, you will learn to play seven modes or scales or moorshanas, and six thaats of Northern Indian music on a Bansuri (Indian Flute). The bansuri is capable of playing these scales without using half notes. For detailed explanation please see ‘part 4’ from the same series. To view English Subtitles please use the ‘CC’ option.

Hello Sangtar Ji,
I know the basics of Basuri and I want to learn more. But it almost impossible to find chords( in terms of Sa, Re, Ga,..) for Basuri in Internet. I am in US and I have tried to find books( hindi) for Basuri, but I have not been able to find books with chords. I am also not that good to identify chords by listening to the music. Will you please forward me chords of simple Ragas, so I can practice more.
Or any suggestions on how to learn more.
Thank you
Ujwal Sapkota
Dear Ujwal, Do you know basic Thaats? And, are you capable of playing half notes on your Bansuri?
Dear Sir,
I have been trying to play semitone for last few days now. But no matter how much I try I am unable to get clear sound, its either just the sound of air or very very low sound.
Please help with few tips on how to get semi-tone. I have seen your video and you are playing it wonderfully.
Please help with some more tips.
Thanks and Regards,
Ankush
Sangtarji
good videos….just out of curousity how long have you been learning bansuri for? did you learn it in India?
I have sent you a message on youtube as well but again it’d be helpful if you can put a video showing how to play Komal Madhyam and Teevra SARGAM…..so we don’t get into habit of producing wrong sound……
thanks
I began playing Bansuri when I was about 15. I saw someone (I knew) holding two to play on stage. I asked if I could try. I couldn’t even get any sound out of it. He gave me one of his to try at home. As soon as I got the sound, I was hooked. Later I took it to Ustad Ji (Late Ustad Jaswant Singh Bhanwra Ji) and learned the basics. However I have learning music since my childhood. So I knew the scales etc.
Hi. Thanks so much for your you tube vids, easy to understand, and so so helpful. I have only been playing a few months but I have discovered a handy way of working out some of the phrases. I downloaded some of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia music from Amazon onto your I pod. Then listen with the headphones and play the flute at the same time. For some reason as the flute resonates in your mouth you can work out the notes he is playing, that is off course if your playing an E/B flute (Sa/Pa). The subtle use of breath and half notes is stunning and how this simple instrument sounds so wonderful.
