Why ‘Raag Bhoopali’ is considered of “Kalyan thaat” even there is no “Tivra madhyam” in aroh or avroh
Dear Thaker, Ragas have Jaties and Jaties can be pentatonic (Audav), hexatonic (Chhadav) or heptatonic (Sampooran). All Jaties are created in all Thaats by eliminating notes. It is eventually bound to happen that whatever note makes a Thaat or scale different from the other, that note will be dropped in a Raga. When MA and Ni are dropped in Bilaval, DeshKar is created. When Ma and Ni are dropped in Kalyan, Bhoopali is created. Having said that, each Raga also have its personality. And that personality goes beyond the notes used in a Raga. How would you sing a phrase differently in Bilaval or Kalyan if you were not to sing Ma and Ni in it? That is the question. It is up to the performer from alittle help from the Pakad and Chal of a Raga to bring out the personality of its parent scale.
